A working chimney depends on a simple principle: warm air rises. As fire warms the air inside the flue, that air moves upward and out of the chimney. This upward movement draws fresh air into the firebox to feed the fire and carries combustion gases safely outside.
Draft becomes weak when that path is restricted or when the chimney cannot establish enough warmth and upward pull. A tall, properly sized chimney generally drafts more effectively than a short one, but height is only one part of the equation.
